Athletic Club and Elche played to a 0-0 draw Friday evening at San Mamés in Bilbao, Spain, as Athletic’s pursuit of a European spot stalled against a resolute Elche defense.
Athletic Club, currently ninth in La Liga with 31 points, had been seeking to close the four-point gap separating them from the top six. They entered the match following consecutive league victories over Levante and Oviedo. However, Ernesto Valverde’s team continues to struggle with defensive solidity, failing to record a clean sheet in their last 13 matches.
Elche, positioned 16th in the league and only one point above the relegation zone, arrived at San Mamés without an away win in La Liga this season, with a record of 0-4-7 on the road. Despite their struggles away from home, Elche’s last La Liga away victory came against Athletic Club at San Mamés in May 2023.
The match saw limited offensive output from either side. Alex Berenguer of Athletic Club had a shot saved by Iñaki Peña in the 90th minute, although Rodrigo Mendoza’s attempt for Elche was thwarted by Unai Simón in the 84th minute. Both teams struggled to convert opportunities into goals.
The game was punctuated by several cautions. Dani Vivian of Athletic Club and Mikel Jauregizar both received yellow cards for fouls. Elche made substitutions in the late stages of the match, bringing on John Donald for Álvaro Núñez and Josan for Germán Valera in the 88th minute. Athletic Club responded with a substitution of their own, Aitor Paredes replacing Aymeric Laporte in the 80th minute.
The stalemate leaves Elche still searching for their first away win of the season and facing continued pressure to avoid relegation. Athletic Club’s inability to secure a victory at home, despite their attacking prowess, raises concerns about their consistency as they chase a European qualification spot.
