Bahrain – Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali has moved to assuage concerns surrounding Max Verstappen’s future in the sport, stating he is confident the four-time world champion will remain with Red Bull despite recent criticisms of proposed changes to the 2026 regulations.

Verstappen, who secured his fourth consecutive drivers’ title in 2024, voiced his displeasure with the direction of the sport’s technical regulations, describing the planned new cars as “Formula E on steroids.” He previously indicated that a lack of enjoyment driving the next generation of Formula 1 cars could prompt him to reconsider his future in the series.

Domenicali, speaking after a meeting with Verstappen at the Formula 1 pre-season test in Bahrain on Wednesday, emphasized the importance of the driver’s continued involvement. “I met with Max,” Domenicali said. “We know Max will be part of the future of Formula 1. It is very essential we listen to him, as we do with all of the top drivers.”

Acknowledging Verstappen’s direct communication style, Domenicali added, “He has a way of saying something that can be interpreted in a certain way. But I can guarantee to you that Max wants and does care about Formula 1 more than anyone else.” He described their discussion as “very constructive,” outlining plans for further dialogue with the FIA and teams to address Verstappen’s concerns.

The core of Verstappen’s feedback centers on maintaining the driving experience as a central tenet of Formula 1, even as the sport evolves technologically. Domenicali explained, “The evolution behind the technology of the car requires a different way of driving the cars. That has happened in the past and it will happen in the future, too.” He anticipates a more nuanced perspective from Verstappen following further discussions later in the year.

Domenicali attributed his confidence in Verstappen’s commitment to a strong personal relationship. “Because I have a very excellent relationship with Max,” he stated. “I know him very, very well. I spend a lot of time with him. That is the reason, full stop. And he loves Formula 1, there’s no doubt about it.”

The 2026 regulation changes, encompassing both new power units and chassis designs, aim to enhance the sustainability of Formula 1. However, the scale of the overhaul has prompted debate about the potential impact on the quality of racing. Domenicali dismissed suggestions of widespread concern, stating, “I don’t understand the panic that is going around.”

“There will be incredible racing, a lot of action and that is the most important thing,” he continued. “We need to stay calm because as always when there are new regulations – as there was in 2014, 2017 and 2021 – there is a doubt that everything is wrong. I am not worried at all.”

The opening race of the 2026 season is scheduled to take place at Albert Park in Melbourne on March 6-8. Sky Sports will broadcast every race of the season live.
