Santos FC secured a dominant 6-0 victory over Velo Clube on Sunday, marking the return of Brazilian star Neymar after a ten-game absence due to a left knee injury. The Campeonato Paulista match, played at Vila Belmiro, saw Neymar enter the game at halftime and contribute an assist in the 81st minute, setting up Gabriel Barbosa for Santos’ fifth goal of the night.
The 34-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in December, following a period of strong form that saw him score five goals and register one assist in four games. His decision to play through the injury towards the end of 2025 was crucial in helping Santos avoid relegation from Brazil’s Serie A.
Neymar’s return has ignited hopes of a potential recall to the Brazilian national team, despite not featuring since October 2023. Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has previously indicated he would have “no problem” including Neymar in the squad if he regained full fitness, according to reports from September.
Santos manager Juan Pablo Vojvoda emphasized Neymar’s importance, stating, “I think everyone needs Neymar. Santos, the national team… Ancelotti will be happy if he’s doing well. One thing will lead to another.” Vojvoda as well highlighted Neymar’s continued ambition, noting his competitive drive even in training. “He still has that ambition. I see it in every little game, in every small-sided game in training, he wants to be there and he wants to win. That’s what motivates him.”
The victory over Velo Clube propelled Santos into the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Paulista, where they will face Novorizontino. Velo Clube, still, was relegated to Série A2 following the defeat. Gabigol scored twice for Santos, with Moisés, Thaciano, Gabriel Menino, and Rollheiser also contributing to the scoreline.
Neymar’s performance included two shots on goal, 33 completed passes, and four successful dribbles. He also expressed frustration with some of the physical challenges from Velo Clube players during the match.
Brazil is scheduled to play friendly matches against France and Croatia in March as part of their preparations for the World Cup, which begins on June 13th in Recent Jersey with a match against Morocco.
