Scorpion Design Leaked for The Amazing Spider-Man 3

Concept art for the Scorpion character, intended for a canceled sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man film series, surfaced online over the weekend, sparking renewed interest in the villain among fans. The designs, created by Tom Zhao, were originally intended for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, a project abandoned by Sony Pictures in 2014.

The leaked artwork depicts a markedly different grab on Mac Gargan, the character known as the Scorpion in Marvel Comics. Unlike the traditional armored suit and tail stinger seen in the comics, Zhao’s design features a more streamlined, military-inspired aesthetic. The “tail” is described as a “quick-aiming laser” intended to intercept projectiles, according to Zhao’s notes accompanying the artwork. This diverges significantly from the neurotoxic stinger typically associated with the character.

The Scorpion was initially slated to appear in a planned team-up film featuring the Sinister Six, a group of Spider-Man’s adversaries. The concept involved Harry Osborn assembling the team, equipping them with technology from Oscorp. The project was ultimately scrapped when Sony’s plans for a shared Spider-Man universe were disrupted by negotiations with Marvel Studios, leading to the character’s integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Mac Gargan, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #19 in December 1964 as a private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to discredit Spider-Man. He later became the Scorpion in Amazing Spider-Man #20, donning a technologically advanced suit that granted him superhuman abilities. The character has since taken on various aliases, including Venom and Spider-Man, and has been a recurring antagonist for Peter Parker.

While the Scorpion did eventually appear in the MCU in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, portrayed by Michael Mando, his role was limited. A post-credits scene hinted at a future escalation of the character’s threat. Gargan’s history also includes a legal dispute with J. Jonah Jameson while incarcerated at the Raft, a high-security prison, according to reports from Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.

The newly revealed concept art has prompted discussion among fans, with some expressing disappointment at the departure from the character’s comic book origins, while others appreciate the unique design approach. Marvel Studios has not commented on the leaked artwork or any potential future plans for the Scorpion.
