Henri Gascard: Biography, Artworks & Auction Results | Artsy

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Henri Gascard, a French painter who found success portraying the English court during the reign of Charles II, died in Rome on January 1, 1701, at the age of approximately 66. His career spanned both France and England, culminating in his final years in Italy.

Born in Paris around 1635, Gascard was the son of Pierre Gascar, a painter and sculptor. He initially gained recognition for his portraiture skills, including a 1667 portrait of Nicolas de Lafond, author of the “Gazette of Holland,” which was later engraved by Peter Lombart. Around 1674, Gascard moved to England, likely through the influence of Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth, a favorite mistress of Charles II.

Gascard’s arrival in England coincided with a period of perceived frivolity, and his flamboyant painting style proved popular among the English aristocracy. He rapidly secured patronage, notably from the Duchess of Portsmouth, and painted numerous prominent figures of the court. His portraits included Charles II himself, Louise, Duchess of Portsmouth (twice), Barbara, Duchess of Cleveland, and her daughter Barbara Fitzroy, as well as Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, Frances Stewart, Duchess of Richmond, George FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Northumberland, Nell Gwyn, and Sophia Bulkeley. He similarly painted portraits of Edmund Verney and Philip Herbert, 7th Earl of Pembroke.

Contemporary accounts suggest Gascard prioritized lavish details and ornamentation over strict likeness in his portraits, compensating for any shortcomings in resemblance with opulent draperies and adornments. This approach allowed him to amass a considerable fortune, reportedly exceeding £10,000 during his time in England. His work was often engraved by prominent artists of the period, including Peter Vanderbank and Étienne Baudet.

After a successful period in England, Gascard relocated to Rome, where he continued to paint until his death in 1701. His works are now available for sale through art dealers like Castelbarco Antiques, and reproductions are offered by companies such as Meisterdrucke. He is remembered as a portraitist of royalty and aristocrats, having captured the likenesses of many influential figures of the 17th century.
