INDYCAR: Christian Rasmussen’s Oval Success & 2026 Season Outlook

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Christian Rasmussen, the 2023 INDY NXT by Firestone champion, emerged as a surprising third-place finisher in NTT INDYCAR SERIES oval points scoring last year, a result that signals a potential breakthrough for both the driver and his Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) team.

Alex Palou, who secured the 2023 series championship and a victory in the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, dominated oval performance with 252 points. Pato O’Ward followed with 208 points, winning the other oval race at Iowa Speedway. However, it was Rasmussen who quietly established himself as a force on the oval tracks, accumulating 173 points despite a challenging debut season.

Rasmussen’s strong showing wasn’t without adversity. A first-lap crash at Nashville Superspeedway limited him to just five points in the season finale. However, he consistently demonstrated an ability to advance through the field, finishing in the top eight in the other six oval races. His maiden series win came at the Milwaukee Mile, marking a significant milestone in his young INDYCAR career.

Notably, Rasmussen excelled on ovals despite often starting from less-than-ideal grid positions. He climbed from 18th to sixth at Indianapolis, from 25th to third at World Wide Technology Raceway, from 19th to sixth in the first Iowa race, and from 17th to eighth in the second Iowa race. Even at Milwaukee, he qualified ninth.

ECR has undergone significant changes since Ted Gelov joined as a partner, bringing with him the Heartland Food Group and its brands, Java House and Splenda. Rasmussen believes these developments are fostering a positive momentum within the team. “I think everyone got a taste of it last year where the team is going, and I think there’s more of that coming here in the near future,” he said.

The team, which also fields full-season cars for Alexander Rossi and an Indy-only entry for team co-owner Ed Carpenter, is focused on continuous improvement. Rasmussen feels the timing of these enhancements is particularly advantageous as the series prepares for its oval track schedule.

“For whatever reason (ovals) just kind of click with me,” Rasmussen stated, adding that he has secured two oval wins in INDY NXT and now one in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

The series will conduct an Open Test at Phoenix Raceway on Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18, in preparation for the Good Ranchers 250, scheduled for March 6-7. This race will be the first of six oval races on the 2026 INDYCAR SERIES calendar.
