David Brown, currently serving as Director of the Office of Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will participate in a seminar hosted by the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering Graduate Seminar Series. The seminar’s date and specific topic were not immediately available.
Brown has held his current position since 2016, overseeing administrative and facilities services for the DOE’s 7,000-member headquarters team. Prior to this role, he led a department-wide strategy focused on attracting, training, and retaining the DOE’s 2,000-member acquisition and project management workforce, ensuring they had access to necessary information technology tools, according to a Department of Energy biography.
Before joining the DOE, Brown spent 27 years with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, culminating in his 2005 appointment as Business Director for Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia. In that capacity, he managed over $2.5 billion annually in facilities planning, real estate, engineering design, construction, public works, and environmental services, overseeing a workforce of 3,750 personnel and extensive contract capabilities.
Brown’s career at the DOE has been marked by several accolades, including the 2024 Secretary’s Achievement Award, the 2023 Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service, and the 2021 Secretary’s Honor Award. He also received the Secretary’s Appreciation Award in 2019 and 2012, as well as the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award in 2011 and the Navy Meritorious Civil Service Award in 1998.
He holds certifications as a Professional Engineer in Virginia and a Certified Energy Manager. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from LeTourneau University, an MBA from the College of William and Mary, a certificate in Leadership from George Washington University, and completion of the Harvard Senior Executive Fellows program.
In June 2022, colleagues gathered to celebrate Brown’s 38-year career and contributions to the Department of Energy’s applied mathematics and computational science programs. At that time, Steve Binkley, Deputy Director of the Office of Science, stated that Brown had “more of an impact on DOE’s applied math and computer science community and programs than any other person.” Brown retired from Berkeley Lab on July 1, 2022.
David Brown is also listed on LinkedIn as a Deputy Director, Technical Services, Office of Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy. He recently shared a post regarding the Department of Energy’s $7 billion investment into seven regional clean hydrogen hubs.
