by Emma Walker – News Editor

A fire broke out in a shed adjacent to a home on Sportterreinstraat in Hoogezand, Netherlands, on Monday afternoon, February 16, 2026. Firefighters responded to the scene around 2:10 PM local time, quickly escalating the response to a “middelbrand” – a medium-sized fire – due to the intensity of the blaze and the risk of it spreading.

Initial reports indicated significant smoke development as flames engulfed the shed. Fire crews from Hoogezand, Harkstede, Slochteren, and Groningen Sontweg were dispatched to combat the fire, utilizing four tank trucks, a ladder truck, and a command vehicle, according to dispatch logs from Meldkamer Noord-Nederland.

Firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the neighboring residence, averting further damage. Geert Anne Mollema of the fire department confirmed that the quick response prevented the fire’s expansion. The shed itself was completely destroyed by the flames.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Firefighters are currently engaged in extinguishing remaining embers and conducting carbon monoxide (CO) measurements in adjacent homes to ensure the safety of residents before they are permitted to re-enter.

Stichting Salvage, a disaster relief organization, has been called in to assist the property owners with the process of assessing and handling the resulting damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
