GREENFIELD — The Greenfield boys basketball team secured a 62-57 victory over Ware in the Western Mass. Class C semifinals on Monday, advancing to the championship game.

The win marks a significant step for Greenfield, continuing a successful season for the program. Details of the game’s progression were not immediately available, but the final score confirms the team’s advancement.

The victory comes as Baystate Health explores repurposing the former Mary Lane Hospital campus in Ware, according to reporting from MassLive. Baystate intends to utilize federal funding from Massachusetts’ share of the Rural Health Transformation Fund – totaling $162 million – to expand its Greenfield Family Medicine Residency program into the Ware location. The project focuses on renovating the 103-year-ancient Wetherby Building, which remains boarded up after demolition work on other parts of the hospital campus concluded last summer.

The proposed expansion aims to replicate the success of the Greenfield residency program, which has seen recent graduates remain in the area to practice medicine. Baystate’s Family Medicine Residency Program currently trains 12 residents, with four new doctors joining annually. The renovation of the Wetherby building is estimated to cost between $9 million and $12.7 million, according to a report provided to the town 13 months ago.

Separately, Baystate Health has become the beneficiary of the $8 million Lewis Gilbert Trust, originally designated to support Mary Lane Hospital. The institution plans to use these funds to establish a new primary and “convenient care” facility in Ware, complete with lab and x-ray capabilities, though this facility will not be located on the Mary Lane campus.

In Ware, the Behavioral Health Network operates a KIDSTOP Children’s Center at 70 Pleasant Street, offering services to the community. The network maintains multiple locations throughout Massachusetts, providing a range of behavioral health and addiction treatment services.
