A multi-vehicle collision snarled traffic on Interstate 77 near Charlotte, North Carolina, this morning. First responders arrived at the scene, located near the interchange with Interstate 485, at approximately 10:40 a.m. Authorities closed three lanes traveling far-right, causing significant delays for commuters.
The incident occurred on a stretch of I-77 that is part of a 105.7-mile segment running from the South Carolina state line to the Virginia state line, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This section of the highway passes through Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is located.
The I-77 and I-485 interchange has been the focus of infrastructure improvements in recent years. A new four-level interchange was completed to address congestion in the area. The project, completed several years ago, utilized weathered steel and pre-stressed concrete in its construction, with the upper bridge rising 90 feet above the existing terrain. Reinforced earth walls were likewise incorporated into the design to stabilize the surrounding landscape.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the area is known for heavy traffic volume. The interchange serves as part of the southwest Outer Loop around Charlotte, a major transportation corridor for the region.
As of this afternoon, authorities have not released details regarding the number of vehicles involved or the extent of any injuries. Traffic continues to be impacted and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has not provided an estimated time for the full reopening of all lanes.
