Wuppertaler SV Seek First Win of Year After Latest Defeat | Regional Football

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

The Wuppertaler SV is searching for its first victory of 2026, and faces mounting pressure after a 3-0 defeat against Rödinghausen on Saturday, extending a winless streak that prompted the club to appoint a new head coach earlier this month.

Mike Wunderlich, 39, officially took the helm on January 2nd, replacing Sebastian Tyrala, who was dismissed after eight consecutive games without a win. The appointment, yet, was not without its own complications. Ahrweiler BC, Wunderlich’s previous employer, confirmed the move on December 30th, preceding the WSV’s official announcement on January 2nd, raising questions about internal communication within the club.

Wunderlich brings a wealth of experience from his playing career, having featured for clubs including Viktoria Köln, FSV Frankfurt, and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Prior to joining Wuppertaler SV, he successfully led Ahrweiler BC to the top of the Rheinlandliga table. He has brought Kevin Rodrigues-Pires with him as co-coach; Rodrigues-Pires previously played for Wuppertaler SV from 2020 to 2024.

The coaching change comes amidst further upheaval within the Wuppertaler SV’s leadership. Thomas Richter, the club’s long-serving Sportvorstand, resigned from his position just one day before Tyrala’s dismissal, citing personal reasons. Gaetano Manno remains the Sportlicher Leiter as of January 2026.

Wunderlich inherits a team currently positioned in a relegation spot in the Regionalliga West. The club’s recent struggles are compounded by having the youngest squad and the second-lowest market value in the league. The new coach’s immediate task is to stabilize the team and secure their status in the fourth tier of German football. The defeat to Rödinghausen, a crucial match in the relegation battle, underscores the urgency of the situation.

The Wuppertaler SV will next face [opponent to be determined], with the club yet to announce any further personnel changes or strategic shifts in response to the recent setbacks.
