Google released the first beta of Android 17 on Tuesday, February 11, 2026, offering developers an early gaze at the next major iteration of the world’s most widely used mobile operating system. The release, initially slated for release on February 11th but delayed briefly, marks a shift in Google’s Android development cycle, moving away from traditional Developer Preview releases toward a continuous “Canary” channel.
The Android 17 Beta 1 is now available, according to Google, and a second beta is planned for March 2026. This second beta will include the Platform Stability milestone, delivering final SDK and NDK APIs, and largely finalizing app-facing behaviors for comprehensive developer testing. Matthew McCullough, VP of Product Management at Android, announced the beta’s availability, emphasizing the platform’s continued focus on privacy, security, and performance.
The move to a continuous Canary channel offers several benefits, Google says. Features and APIs will now land in Canary as soon as they pass internal testing, providing faster access for developers. Early “battle-testing” within the Canary program is intended to result in a more polished Beta experience, with APIs and behaviors closer to their final state. The Canary channel as well supports over-the-air updates and integrates more easily with continuous integration workflows, facilitating quicker feedback on potential changes.
Android 17 will introduce significant enhancements to camera and media capabilities, as well as new tools for optimizing connectivity. Expanded profiles for companion devices are also planned. The release will also bring Material 3 Expressive, previously exclusive to Pixel devices, to a wider range of Android phones, including new animations, icon shapes, and blur effects.
Google has not yet announced a specific date for the stable release of Android 17, but has internally tagged the release with “26Q2,” indicating a launch window between April and June of this year. The company has not yet commented on specific features beyond those already highlighted in the beta release.
