Snow Returns: Belgium Braces for Widespread Winter Weather

by Emma Walker – News Editor

A nationwide alert has been issued for Belgium as significant snowfall is expected to begin overnight, according to meteorologist Luc Trullemans. The warning, issued on the evening of Saint Valentine’s Day, anticipates widespread disruption as the weather system, originating in Scandinavia, moves across the country.

Trullemans cautioned that the snowfall will intensify tomorrow, impacting all regions of Belgium. The alert level is set to rise to yellow across the entire country starting at 13:00 hours today, indicating potentially hazardous conditions.

Recent reports indicate a sharp drop in temperatures, with some areas experiencing lows of -10°C this weekend. This cold snap precedes the arrival of the Scandinavian weather system, creating conditions conducive to substantial snow accumulation.

Several news outlets are reporting on the impending weather event. DHnet reports that landscapes will be “parsemed de blanc” (sprinkled with white), while 7sur7.be states that no region will be spared. La Libre.be details the expected impacts and the activation of the yellow alert.

The approaching snowfall follows a period of extreme cold that impacted Belgium earlier this month, as reported by Luc Trullemans on January 5th. That earlier cold snap prompted warnings about treacherous road conditions.

While the immediate focus is on the snowfall, the timing also coincides with the approaching school carnival holidays. The potential for travel disruption and hazardous conditions during this period is a key concern.
