Speculation is mounting that LeBron James may return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for what could be a farewell tour, according to reports circulating within the NBA. ESPN insider Tim MacMahon reported on February 13, 2026, that a growing sentiment exists around the league regarding a potential reunion between James and the Cavaliers next summer.
“I’m hearing more and more around the league that this summer there’s going to be a reunion and maybe a memorable farewell tour back home with the Cleveland Cavaliers next year,” MacMahon stated.
James, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, will become an unrestricted free agent at the complete of the 2025-26 season. He previously played eleven seasons with the Cavaliers across two stints (2003-2010, 2014-2018). During his first tenure in Cleveland, James was a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and a six-time All-Star, though the team did not achieve championship success until after his initial departure. He led the Cavaliers to their first NBA championship in 2016, ending the city’s 52-year professional sports title drought.
The possibility of James returning to Cleveland has been discussed for some time, but recent reports suggest the scenario is gaining traction. Adding fuel to the speculation, reports indicate that key Cavaliers players, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, are actively attempting to recruit James to join them. With Evan Mobley also in the mix, a team featuring James, Mitchell, and Harden could contend for a championship while simultaneously providing a platform for James to conclude his career in front of his home-state fans.
Financially, a return to Cleveland would likely require James to accept a reduced salary, given the Cavaliers’ existing payroll, which is projected to be near the $220 million mark for the 2026-27 season. However, such a sacrifice could be seen as worthwhile to secure a fitting end to his illustrious career.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have not officially commented on the possibility of pursuing James this offseason.
