TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A three-run eighth inning propelled No. 16 Florida State to a 5-1 victory over James Madison in the opening game of a three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday, February 13, 2026.
The game remained a tight contest until late, with the Seminoles holding a narrow 2-1 lead heading into the eighth. Florida State capitalized on a series of events, including a balk and a two-RBI single by pinch-hitter Noah Sheffield, to extend their advantage. Sheffield’s hit came against James Madison reliever Adam Horvath after the Dukes brought in a new pitcher with the bases loaded.
Florida State coach Link Jarrett opted for Wes Mendes as his Opening Day starter, a decision reflecting confidence in the right-hander who previously served as the team’s Sunday starter. Mendes delivered a solid performance, according to Jarrett, who noted the pitcher had been working to refine his mechanics and pitch mix, including the addition of a cutter and adjustments to his changeup.
James Madison countered with right-hander Griffin Polley on the mound. The Dukes managed to keep the game close for much of the evening, but ultimately couldn’t contain the Seminoles’ offense in the late innings.

Saturday’s game, February 14, is designated as Military Saturday Presented by VyStar, with planned recognitions for military personnel and a performance of “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch. The series concludes on Sunday, February 15, with a “Sunday Funday” promotion offering free admission to Kids Club members and youth wearing little league jerseys, as well as a postgame opportunity for children 12 and under to run the bases.
