Indiana Hoosiers football coach Curt Cignetti is building a dynasty in Bloomington, and he’s doing it largely through the transfer portal. The Hoosiers, fresh off their first national championship victory – a 27-21 win over Miami at Hard Rock Stadium – are heavily focused on repeating their success, and Cignetti is aggressively reshaping his roster.
The winter transfer portal window recently closed, and the Big Ten emerged as a major beneficiary, signaling an intent to continue its dominance. Indiana, having completed an undefeated season, led the conference in transfer acquisitions with a total of 16 players. Key additions include quarterback Josh Hoover (TCU), wide receiver Nick Marsh (Michigan State), and running back Turbo Richard (Boston College). Hoover is expected to replace Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, marking the third consecutive season Cignetti has brought in a transfer quarterback to lead his offense.
“Took some chances, found a way. Let me tell you: We won the national championship at Indiana University. It can be done,” Cignetti said in a statement released by the Associated Press after the championship win.
Penn State, under new head coach Matt Campbell, followed Indiana’s lead, bringing in 22 players from Campbell’s former institution, Iowa State. The most significant acquisition for the Nittany Lions is quarterback Rocco Becht, intended to spearhead Campbell’s new offensive scheme. Other notable additions from Iowa State include cornerback Jeremiah Cooper, running back Carson Hansen, and safety Marcus Neal.
Ohio State took a different approach, focusing on experienced replacements for players who departed via the transfer portal. The Buckeyes lost 31 players to the portal but brought in 16 new players, prioritizing veteran defensive talent. Safeties Earl James (Florida State) and Terry Moore (Duke), along with defensive linemen John Walker (UCF), Qua Russaw (Alabama), and James Smith (Alabama), are expected to be immediate contributors.
Oregon, consistently active in the transfer market, added safety Koi Perich (Minnesota), defensive lineman D’Antre Robinson (North Carolina), and defensive back Carl Williams (Baylor) to bolster their defense. The Ducks similarly secured quarterback Dylan Raiola, who is expected to redshirt this season behind Donte Moore.
UCLA’s new head coach, Bob Chesney, mirrored Cignetti’s strategy, bringing 10 players with him from James Madison. Dynamic running back Wayne Knight and edge defender Sahir West are among the most notable additions from Chesney’s former program. Chesney’s total transfer haul reached 14 players, all with prior starting experience.
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti expressed confidence in the league’s continued success, stating, “I feel like we’re just getting started,” following Indiana’s championship victory, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger. The Big Ten now boasts four national championships, trailing only the SEC’s six.
