AI Health Advice: 5x Higher Harm Risk, Study Finds

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Individuals relying on artificial intelligence platforms for health guidance are five times more likely to experience adverse outcomes compared to those who do not, according to a recent report from Medscape News Canada.

The findings come as AI’s presence in healthcare rapidly expands, with companies like Medscape launching advanced AI reference tools for healthcare professionals. In November 2025, Medscape unveiled Medscape AI, described as the first medical-grade Generative AI experience. The tool integrates the company’s proprietary content, peer-reviewed literature, and real-time medical news, aiming to provide timely and trustworthy insights to support clinical decision-making. Dr. Kevin Fernando, FRCGP FRCP Edin. FAcadMEd MSc, stated that the launch “puts clinicians at the forefront of innovation.”

Despite the promise of AI in medicine, the Medscape report highlights significant risks associated with patients self-diagnosing or following treatment recommendations generated by AI. The report does not detail the specific types of harm experienced by those following AI advice, nor does it specify the nature of the health issues prompting individuals to seek guidance from these platforms.

The increasing adoption of AI in healthcare is also prompting discussion about the potential for an “AI bubble” within the industry. A Medscape article published in October 2025 noted OpenEvidence, an AI medical search and knowledge platform, as an example of AI’s growing influence in medicine. The article suggests that AI is rapidly becoming integrated into medical practice.

Medscape’s development of AI tools is intended to address the need for reliable medical information. According to the company, Medscape AI was co-developed with clinicians and is powered by three decades of Medscape expertise. The platform aims to deliver specialty-specific insights, supporting informed decision-making for the 13 million healthcare professionals globally who use Medscape’s digital platform.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform healthcare and revolutionize patient care, according to Medscape Education. However, the Medscape News Canada report underscores the potential for harm when patients bypass traditional medical consultation and rely solely on AI-generated advice.
