The French Ministry of Education will propose financial compensation to the widow of Caroline Grandjean, a school principal who died by suicide in September 2025, Education Minister Edouard Geffray announced Tuesday.

Geffray told the National Assembly that he would make a “proposal for reparations” to Christine Grandjean-Paccoud, following an administrative inquiry that concluded there was an “institutional failure” in the support provided to the educator, according to statements reported by France24 and Franceinfo.

Caroline Grandjean, 42, was the director of a primary school in Moussages, Cantal. She had been subjected to harassment due to her homosexuality, as reported by Nouvelobs. The administrative investigation, initiated immediately after her death on September 1st, revealed “a succession of micro-decisions… administrative-bureaucratic” that collectively constituted a failure of institutional support, Geffray stated.

Even as the inquiry found no evidence of malicious intent or individual fault, the minister acknowledged the systemic shortcomings. Discussions between the ministry and the widow’s lawyer are expected to begin shortly to determine the form and amount of the financial compensation, according to the Agence France-Presse, as cited by Franceinfo.

Christine Grandjean-Paccoud has filed a complaint against the national education system for “harassment,” according to Le Monde. She has expressed regret that those responsible for the failures in support have not been “recognized.”

The Education Ministry confirmed the findings of the administrative inquiry on February 10, 2026, stating that the investigation concluded a “failure of institutional support” in the case, Franceinfo reported.
