FC Nantes: Head Rolls Amidst Historic Low Season

Nantes, France – In a swift and unexpected move, Baptiste Drouet has been relieved of his duties as head of recruitment for FC Nantes, the club confirmed Wednesday. The decision comes as the team struggles through a historically poor season, prompting a reassessment of the club’s sporting direction.

Drouet, appointed to the role in July 2023, was tasked with overhauling Nantes’ recruitment strategy, a system previously criticized for being outdated. His arrival, reportedly prepared since January 2023, signaled a commitment from club leadership to modernize the process and move away from “artisanal methods,” according to reports at the time.

Prior to joining Nantes, Drouet spent several years as a recruiter for FC Lorient. His appointment was seen as a significant step towards a more data-driven approach to player acquisition, combining statistical analysis with traditional scouting methods. He quickly made his mark, overseeing the arrival of 12 new players during his first season with the club.

However, despite the influx of new talent, FC Nantes has failed to improve on the pitch. The club’s performance has drawn criticism from supporters and media alike, leading to increased scrutiny of the recruitment process and, Drouet’s position. Ouest-France reported earlier this year that Drouet was already facing questions regarding his performance.

Drouet’s background is somewhat unconventional for a figure in such a prominent role. A lifelong supporter of FC Nantes, he initially engaged with the game through Football Manager before studying law. He transitioned into football professionally as a player agent, spending seven years with Global Football Agency, gaining valuable insight into the transfer market. He later expressed a preference for working on the club side, focusing on identifying and securing talent.

The club has not yet announced a replacement for Drouet, and no reason for his dismissal has been publicly stated. FC Nantes officials have remained silent on the matter, and no further details regarding the circumstances surrounding his departure have been released. The search for a new head of recruitment is expected to start immediately.
