OREM, Utah — The UCCU Center at Utah Valley University will host the 6A boys and girls state wrestling championships from Wednesday, February 11 through Saturday, February 14. The event is expected to draw large crowds as high school athletes compete for individual and team titles.
The 6A boys tournament features Layton High School as the favorite to secure its fourth consecutive state championship. A key addition to the Lancers’ roster is Austin Paris, a transfer from Grand County, who has already earned three state championships in 2A wrestling and is considered a top competitor nationally in the 157-pound weight class. Challenging Layton for the team title are Westlake High School, Davis High School, Syracuse High School, and Corner Canyon High School.
Westlake boasts returning state champion Kaizen Detoles (175 pounds) and Corbyn Robison (126 pounds), a previous state title winner. A potential breakout star for Westlake is freshman Joe Whitford Jr. In the 138-pound weight class, who could face a tough challenge from Skyridge High School’s Jacob Millward, a freshman who won a state title at 113 pounds last year.
Predictions for individual 6A boys champions include Reid Harris (Syracuse) at 106 pounds, Kaden Oldroyd (Westlake) at 113 pounds, Perry Fowler (Syracuse) at 120 pounds, Lander Bosh (Layton) at 126 pounds, Calin Olson (Riverton) at 132 pounds, Mason Carlson (Syracuse) at 138 pounds, Cohen Mortensen (American Fork) at 144 pounds, Noah Bull (Layton) at 150 pounds, Austin Paris (Layton) at 157 pounds, Gavin Regis (Layton) at 165 pounds, Kaizen Detoles (Westlake) at 175 pounds, Elijah Hawes (Layton) at 190 pounds, Macrae Parker (Herriman) at 215 pounds, and Judd Bowen (Bingham) at 285 pounds.
Team predictions for the 6A boys tournament place Layton in first, followed by Corner Canyon, Westlake, Davis, Syracuse, Riverton, Lone Peak, Skyridge, American Fork, and Herriman.
The 6A girls tournament is anticipated to be highly competitive. Mountain Ridge High School, the returning state champions, are considered a strong contender, but Cedar Valley High School and Westlake High School are close behind. Other schools with realistic chances of winning the title include Copper Hills High School, Corner Canyon High School, Herriman High School, and Syracuse High School.
Westlake’s Tevia Rarick (190 pounds) is aiming for an undefeated season, even as Skyridge’s Madison Sherman hopes to defend her state title at 155 pounds. Cedar Valley’s Alexandra Gates, a previous state champion in 5A, will also be a competitor to watch in the 140-pound weight class.
The 155-pound weight class is expected to be a highlight, potentially featuring a rematch between Skyridge’s Madison Sherman and Hallie Denney from Cedar Valley, who previously competed against each other in the divisional final. A potential semifinal matchup between Denney and Naidelyn Lucio of Mountain Ridge could significantly impact the team standings.
Predicted individual 6A girls champions include Piper Eller (Corner Canyon) at 100 pounds, Brooklyn Eager (Mountain Ridge) at 105 pounds, Rozlyn Robertson (Corner Canyon) at 110 pounds, Maquell Pace (Copper Hills) at 115 pounds, Naomi Kofe (Copper Hills) at 120 pounds, Faith Bowen (Mountain Ridge) at 125 pounds, Telma Rodriguez (Layton) at 130 pounds, Haley Tibbs (Herriman) at 135 pounds, London McEntire (Corner Canyon) at 140 pounds, Olivia Merion (Mountain Ridge) at 145 pounds, Hallie Denney (Cedar Valley) at 155 pounds, Clarion Fager (Corner Canyon) at 170 pounds, Tevia Rarick (Westlake) at 190 pounds, and Bella Birch (Mountain Ridge) at 235 pounds.
