Microsoft has unveiled “Entra Agent ID,” a new system designed to centrally manage the identities of AI agents, alongside enhanced security and data governance features across its AI platform. The announcement, made at the Build 2025 conference, aims to address the growing need to secure and monitor AI applications as they become more integrated into enterprise workflows.
Entra Agent ID, integrated with Copilot Studio and Azure AI Foundry, assigns security identities to AI agents created within those environments. This allows organizations to track and manage non-human actors, a capability previously limited to human users. Microsoft is also collaborating with ServiceNow and Workday to extend identity management capabilities to those platforms, enabling a unified view of both AI agents and human users, according to the company.
The move builds upon Microsoft’s existing security infrastructure, leveraging Microsoft Entra ID – formerly Azure Active Directory – for identity and access management. Microsoft Entra ID helps organizations protect and manage identities across cloud and on-premises environments. The new system also integrates with Microsoft Defender for Cloud and Microsoft Purview to bolster AI security and data governance.
Microsoft Defender for Cloud now directly integrates with Azure AI Foundry, providing real-time detection of over 15 potential threats, including jailbreaking, prompt injection, and data exfiltration. Purview, Microsoft’s data governance platform, has been enhanced with improved data security and compliance features. The integration of Entra ID, Purview, and Defender allows for differentiated search results and generative AI responses based on document access permissions, effectively blocking unauthorized access to sensitive information.
The updates represent a broader effort by Microsoft to strengthen the security and governance of its AI offerings. The company emphasized the importance of protecting AI applications throughout the entire development lifecycle, from creation to deployment. The new features are intended to provide developers and security teams with the tools they need to build and deploy AI responsibly and securely.
