The Aperol Spritz: A Year-Round Cocktail
For many, the Aperol spritz is synonymous with warm weather, falling into the same category as linen shirts and beach days. Once the clock falls back, this quintessential three-ingredient cocktail – made with Aperol, Prosecco, and sparkling water – frequently enough seems to disappear until the following spring.
Though, the Aperol spritz doesn’t have to be limited to warmer months. its luminous orange hue and refreshing taste make it a versatile drink that can be enjoyed year-round. With a few simple adjustments, this classic cocktail can be adapted for any season, becoming a favorite even in the depths of winter.
Making the Spritz: Simplicity and Adaptability
The beauty of the Aperol spritz lies in its simplicity. Unlike many complex cocktails, it requires no shaking or muddling, making it quick and easy to prepare. While many variations exist, the core recipe is remarkably flexible, allowing for personalization based on individual preferences.
A standard spritz recipe includes:
- 2 ounces of Aperol or a nonalcoholic alternative
- 3 ounces of Prosecco or nonalcoholic sparkling wine
- 2 ounces of apple or cranberry juice
- 1 ounce of soda water
Simply pour these ingredients into a glass filled with ice, and the drink is ready to enjoy. The recipe can be easily scaled up for larger gatherings, served in a punch bowl or pitcher. Experimentation is encouraged – a splash of spiced apple cider can add warmth during colder months, or a heavier pour of aperol can intensify the flavor.
It’s important to remember that Aperol, with its 11% alcohol content, is a distilled spirit. While dilution reduces the overall alcohol level, mindful consumption is always recommended.
Garnishing the spritz adds a final touch of elegance.Rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks, dehydrated orange slices, or cranberries are all excellent choices. For a unique presentation, consider creating large ice cubes with embedded apple slices or star anise.
For those who enjoy a sweeter cocktail, rimming the glass with cinnamon sugar adds a delightful touch.
A Lighter Option for Mindful enjoyment
The Aperol spritz, when enjoyed thoughtfully, offers a lighter alternative to heavier cocktails. dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine highlights the spritz as a “lighter, more hydrating option” compared to many conventional holiday beverages.
To further enhance hydration, topping up the glass with soda water as it empties counteracts the diuretic effect of alcohol. For those abstaining from alcohol, substituting Aperol with Crodino or wilfred’s aperitif and Prosecco with a nonalcoholic sparkling wine creates a tasty mocktail.
“I would totally drink this myself and recommend it to my patients,” Ludlam-Raine stated. “It’s a great way of having a tasty drink without feeling like you’re missing out if you’re not having alcohol.”
While fruit juice contributes flavor and antioxidants, Ludlam-raine advises moderation to manage sugar intake, especially when enjoying multiple spritzes.

The Aperol spritz is no longer confined to summer afternoons. Its adaptability and refreshing qualities make it a perfect choice for any occasion, regardless of the season.
