AARP Oklahoma Announces 2026 Community Challenge Grant Program

AARP Oklahoma is inviting eligible nonprofit organizations and governments to apply for the 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant program.Applications are due March 4th at 5 p.m. EST.

What is the AARP Community Challenge?

The AARP Community Challenge funds quick-action projects designed to make communities more livable. These projects focus on improvements to public spaces, transportation, housing, digital connections, and disaster resilience. Now in its tenth year,AARP is considerably increasing its investment,awarding over $8 million in grants as part of its broader Livable Communities initiative.

To date, the program has awarded nearly $500,000 to 37 organizations in Oklahoma.

Grant Opportunities Available

This year, the AARP Community Challenge offers three distinct grant opportunities:

  • Flagship Grants: Support projects improving public places, transportation, housing, digital connections, and disaster resilience. Awards range from a few hundred dollars to $15,000.
  • Capacity-Building Microgrants: Paired with expert support, webinars, and cohort learning, these grants focus on walkability/bikeability, safe home modifications, and disaster preparedness training. Awards are $2,500.
  • Presentation grants: Fund projects that can be replicated by other communities.This year’s focus areas include pedestrian safety (supported by Toyota Motor North America), high-speed internet access (supported by Microsoft), and housing choice design competitions. Awards typically range from $10,000 to $20,000, with a maximum of $25,000.

Impact and Past Projects in Oklahoma

As 2017, AARP has invested $24.3 million in over 2,100 livability projects nationwide. The program prioritizes support for diverse community types – rural, suburban, and urban – with a specific focus on the needs of individuals aged 50 and older.

Oklahoma has already benefited from the Community Challenge, with recent projects including:

  • Accessible walking trails in Tulsa’s Howard Park.
  • A revitalized downtown alley in Okmulgee with seating, murals, and greenery.
  • A Tiny Home for Elders design competition by the Kiowa Tribe.
  • Walk audits in Sapulpa and Muskogee to improve pedestrian infrastructure.
  • Bathroom safety equipment for older adults and residents with disabilities through the Absentee Shawnee Housing Authority.

Eligibility and Request Details

The Community Challenge is open to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) nonprofit organizations and government entities. Other association types will be considered individually. Grant amounts vary depending on the project scope.
