This weekend saw a flurry of athletic competition across Northern Michigan, with wrestling teams battling on the mats, basketball teams hitting the courts, and bowlers rolling strikes. Here’s a​ comprehensive look at the ⁣key results and standout performances from January 12th, 2026.

Grayling Invitational: Vikings Show Grit ⁣despite Challenges

The Grayling wrestling team hosted a 12-team invitational, showcasing a‍ competitive field including Atlanta, Gladwin, Houghton Lake, inland Lakes, Ithaca, Lake City, reed City, Roscommon, Sault ste. Marie, St.Ignace, and Whittemore-Prescott. Despite facing a challenging ​lineup due to injuries and illness, the Vikings demonstrated resilience.

Leading the charge ⁢for Grayling were Max‌ Huspen, Alex​ Moore, and dayton Joseph, each going undefeated‌ with extraordinary​ 5-0 records. Coach Andy Moore acknowledged the ‍team’s struggles but ​praised their effort: “It was a ⁣good day for us,with some injuries and kids being sick ⁢right now. I think if we had our normal lineup, we could have contended for the championship today. We had some wrestlers really step ⁢up today, even though they weren’t feeling 100%.”

Zeke Wright contributed a strong ‍4-1 record,⁢ helping the Vikings achieve a 2-3 overall record for the tournament, with victories over atlanta ⁤(42-31) and St.⁣ Ignace (47-36), and losses to Ithaca (47-33), Sault Ste. Marie (41-25), and Reed City (45-29).

Traverse City⁣ Area Dominance at Sparta Invitational

The⁤ Traverse City area also saw strong performances at the Sparta Invitational. TC West freshman Reed Nyland impressed, defeating an older opponent from ‌Fruitport ‍and finishing with a 3-2 record. Finn O’Brien continued his strong form, going 4-1 with wins against competitors from Grand ⁣Rapids Catholic Central and⁤ Muskegon Reeths-Puffer.⁤

Matthew Quigley of TC West⁤ was ⁣named MVP for the lower weight classes,‌ delivering a flawless 4-0 performance with three pins and a major decision victory over⁣ the⁤ Division 2 state runner-up from plainwell. TC West head coach berard Priante commented, “Kids wrestled really tough ‌today.the team wrestled very well today.” Traverse City St. Francis sophomore Elijah Jaworski also contributed, finishing with ⁣a ⁢3-2 record.

Gaylord Vikings secure Victories at Lapeer invite

Gaylord High School’s wrestling team achieved success at the Lapeer Invite, finishing sixth overall. Jaron Bensinger and Zane Willobee led the way, securing first-place finishes in the 165 and 175-pound divisions, respectively. Jason Cranick added to ‌the team’s success with a second-place finish at 157 pounds.

Boys Basketball: ⁢Gaylord St.Mary Prevails

In boys basketball action, Gaylord st. Mary ‌secured a 62-51 victory over Burt Lake NMCA. Nathan O’Connell led the scoring for GSM with 19 points, supported by Cooper McKinley (13 points), Charles​ Cameron (9‌ points), and Cal Royce (9 points). Elsewhere,Harbor Springs dominated Pellston with a decisive 76-38 win.

Bowling: Cadillac’s ⁣Johnson and TC Striking Tritons’ Clayton Lead⁢ the Way

The‌ Great Northwest Bowling Conference⁢ held its second meet of the season, with Cadillac’s⁤ Keaston johnson topping the boys’ ‍competition with a score of 239. Kyleigh Clayton of the TC ​Striking tritons claimed the girls’ title with a ​high score⁢ of 163.
