Thunder Fall Short in Shootout Battle Against Allen Americans
WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita Thunder suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 shootout loss to the Allen Americans Saturday night at INTRUST Bank Arena, extending their winless streak to three games. Despite a spirited comeback and a first lead of the night in the third period, the Thunder couldn’t hold on, falling to 1-3 in games decided by a shootout this season.
A tale of Two starts: Americans Jump Ahead
The Americans wasted little time establishing their presence, mirroring their quick start in the previous game. Colby McAuley capitalized on a broken play just 1:49 into the contest, netting his 11th goal of the season to give Allen an early 1-0 advantage. The Americans continued to press, and at 13:27, Danny Katic extended the lead to 2-0 on the power play. Katic skillfully positioned himself for a redirect, beating Thunder goaltender Tyriq Outen for his 14th goal of the year.
Thunder Respond with resilience
The Thunder refused to succumb to an early deficit. Michal Stinil ignited the comeback at 15:54, finishing a beautiful passing play initiated by Ryan Finnegan. Stinil’s seventh goal of the campaign cut the Allen lead in half. Early in the second period, Declan Smith continued his strong form, tying the game at two. Displaying remarkable skill, smith split two defenders during a delayed penalty and slipped a backhand shot under the glove of David Tendeck for his fourth goal of the season.
Back-and-forth Action Defines the Second Period
The momentum continued to swing as both teams traded goals.Hank Crone regained the lead for allen at 12:16, capitalizing on a power play opportunity with a well-placed wrist shot. Though, the Thunder quickly answered back. Nico Somerville scored his first goal of the year at 14:53, completing a dynamic rush orchestrated by Nick Nardecchia.nardecchia’s skillful playmaking created the opening for Somerville to beat Tendeck.
Thunder Take the Lead,But Americans Force Overtime
The third period saw the Thunder seize their first lead of the night. Kyle Crnkovic, who has been on a hot streak with five goals in his last five games, found the back of the net at 6:44. A well-placed pass from Kirby Proctor set up Crnkovic for his 16th goal of the season. however,the lead was short-lived. brayden Watts leveled the score at four at 10:16, cutting through the Thunder defense and firing a shot past Outen.
Shootout Heartbreak and special Teams Struggles
A late holding penalty against Peter Bates at 18:21 gave Allen a power play that carried over into overtime.Despite a dominant four-on-four stretch in the extra period, with Crnkovic nearly ending the game with a shot that hit the post, neither team could find the game-winning goal.
In the shootout, Crnkovic was the lone scorer for Wichita in the first round. Allen responded with goals from Michael Gildon and ultimately the game-winner from Danny katic, securing the extra point for the Americans.
The Thunder struggled on the power play, going 0-for-5, while Allen capitalized on two of their six opportunities.
