Cairo,Egypt – January 12,2026 – In a move designed to bolster Egypt’s vital tourism sector while prioritizing safety and regulatory compliance,the Chamber of Tourism Establishments and Restaurants has announced a one-year extension for owners of fixed floating restaurants and establishments operating on the Nile. The new deadline for full legalization is December 31, 2026.
Supporting Nile tourism and Ensuring safety
The decision, reached following close collaboration between the Chamber and the General Authority for River Transport (GART) – a body operating under the Ministry of Transport – provides a crucial extension for businesses navigating complex regulatory adjustments. Yasser Tajoury, chairperson of the Chamber, confirmed that Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, approved the extension.
“This extension is a critically important step in supporting Egyptian tourism, notably the thriving Nile tourism industry,” Tajoury stated.“It provides operators with the necessary time to meet all legal and technical requirements, ensuring the safety and quality of services for our visitors.”
The initial grace period ended on December 31, 2025, creating a pressing need for continued support for these businesses. Sameh El-Gendy, treasurer of the Chamber and Head of the Floating Units and nile Restaurants Committee, emphasized that ongoing collaboration with the River transport authority was instrumental in securing the extension through the end of 2026.
What Owners Need to Do
The extended deadline comes with specific requirements for floating restaurant owners. To achieve full compliance,owners must undertake a comprehensive technical assessment. This assessment must be conducted by a consulting office officially accredited by the GART, and crucially, must include detailed underwater inspections. Furthermore, the assessment report requires endorsement from an Egyptian university recognized for its expertise in shipbuilding.

Recognizing that dry-docking isn’t always feasible for every establishment, the GART offers an alternative. Owners who cannot dry-dock their restaurants have the option to begin constructing a brand-new floating restaurant at a GART-approved shipyard.These new constructions must adhere strictly to the Authority’s prescribed dimensions and specifications.
For owners choosing the full replacement route, an additional one-year grace period will be granted, commencing from the end of December 2026, providing further time to complete the construction and transition.
