From Mall Anchor to Open-Air Destination
For two decades, apple has been a key tenant at the Santa Rosa Plaza, initially opening in 2004 with a 1,500-square-foot space and later expanding to a larger location in 2012 . Though,Apple has decided to relocate to a more expansive 8,684-square-foot space at 720 Farmers Lane within Montgomery Village. This move reflects a broader trend in Apple’s retail approach, prioritizing locations that facilitate community engagement and experiential learning.
The Evolving Apple Store Experience
Apple’s retail strategy has undergone a notable change in recent years. No longer solely focused on sales, Apple Stores now emphasize providing customers with opportunities to learn about and utilize Apple’s diverse range of products and services. This shift is embodied in the “Today at Apple” program, launched in 2017, which offers workshops, sessions, and events designed to empower users . With over 500 stores worldwide offering these programs , the Santa Rosa relocation aligns with this global initiative.
Montgomery Village: A Rising Retail Hub
The move to Montgomery Village is part of a larger revitalization effort for the shopping center, which was acquired by WS Growth in mid-2021 . WS Development has been actively attracting high-profile tenants, including Anthropologie, Sweetgreen, Vuori, Bluemercury, Mendocino Farms, Salt & Straw, Fieldwork Brewery, and Club Pilates. Further additions planned for 2026 include Beach by Everything But Water, Face foundrié, and Blue Bottle Coffee. While Sprinkles Cupcakes was initially slated to open a location, the company has as announced its closure . Jeweler Kendra Scott is also planning a location, with tenant improvements currently under review by the city.

The departure of Apple from Santa Rosa Plaza raises questions about the mall’s future. Though, mall management remains optimistic, emphasizing its role as a “dynamic, connected hub” and highlighting upcoming additions like Dave & Buster’s and P.F. Chang’s.
