Remembering Mary Louise Williams: A Life Dedicated to Education, Environment, and Justice

Mary Louise Williams passed away on January 1, 2026, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 89. A gifted teacher, passionate historian, and devoted friend, Mary Lou dedicated her life to environmental and civil issues, always championing the “common good.”

Early Life and education

born and raised in Mountainair, New Mexico, Mary Lou was the daughter of Fred and Mabel Hail, a businessman and a one-room schoolhouse teacher, respectively. Learning was central to her upbringing, fostered by her parents who regularly traveled to acquire books. She attended Cotty College in Nevada, Missouri, and later earned a B.A. in Education from the University of New Mexico in 1958. She continued her studies, receiving a Master of Arts from St. John’s College in Santa Fe in 1980.

A Career in Education

Mary Lou’s career as an educator profoundly impacted countless students.She taught history, government, and environmental science at Los Alamos High School until her retirement in 1988.Recognizing the importance of environmental awareness, she founded “Students to Save the Environment,” a pioneering student group that actively engaged in advocacy and presented at hearings on critical environmental topics.She also championed civic education through Mock Trial, believing in the importance of understanding the legal system.

Her husband, Michael Williams, supported her work, and together they shared a love for Shakespeare and travel.

Beyond the classroom

Mary Lou’s commitment to public service extended beyond the classroom. She served on the J. Robert Oppenheimer Committee from 1995 to 2019, contributing to the organization through distinguished lectures, scholarship programs, and other initiatives. She was a strong advocate for the exoneration of J.Robert Oppenheimer, actively writing to officials and attorneys and even visiting them in Washington, D.C., celebrating the achievement of this goal in 2022.

Later Years and Legacy

Following Michael’s passing in 2021, Mary Lou spent her final years at Sierra Vista at Vista Living Care in Santa Fe, were she was well-loved by the staff and frequently visited by friends. she is survived by her cherished friends, former students, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Service Information

A burial will be held on wednesday, January 14, at 1:30 p.m. at Guaje Pines Cemetery, 901 Range Road, Los Alamos, NM 87544. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m.at Rivera Family Funeral Home, 305 Calle salazar, Espanola, NM 87532, (505) 753-2288.
