James Gunn & Peter Safran‘s DC Studios Contracts Extended to 2027
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Amidst ongoing speculation about Warner Bros. Finding’s potential sale to Netflix, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have secured extended contracts with the studio, now set to expire in spring 2027. Thier original four-year deals were previously slated to end in October 2026.
The extension was revealed in a new profile published by Bloomberg on Friday, signaling continued confidence in the pair’s vision for the DC Universe. Warner bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who appointed Gunn and Safran after being impressed by Gunn’s “Superman” script, offered strong support, stating: “The work of James and Peter, their creative vision, it’s compelling and a great economic return. There’s no storytelling content that we have that provides a bigger palette than DC, and there’s nobody around right now who can tell these stories with the same creativity and excitement.”
Despite the larger corporate uncertainty, Gunn and Safran are reportedly maintaining their established plans for the DCU. Gunn emphasized the importance of theatrical releases, noting, “The communal, theatrical experience is something that is incredibly important and remarkably well suited to our big spectacle films.”
The next installment in the DC Universe is “Supergirl,” with the first trailer expected to debut online this Thursday. Advancement on “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” is also progressing, though Gunn acknowledged the film is taking time, stating, “If you’re gonna make a Batman movie, it better be f-ing awesome.”
