Albuquerque Advances Plan for Rapidly Built, Affordable Housing
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The City of Albuquerque is moving forward with a plan to address vacant lots and increase housing options through the use of prefabricated “boxable” homes. City leaders toured a model home Friday, signaling progress toward a potential rollout of dozens of the units across city-owned properties.
The homes, manufactured in a Nevada factory and shipped to Albuquerque, are 300 square feet and cost approximately $100,000 each. Construction crews can unfold and finish three to four of the homes per day, offering a significantly faster build time than customary construction.
“What’s crucial about this product is that it can activate lots that have been vacant for years, that other developers really haven’t found a use for,” explained Terry Brunner,Director of the City of Albuquerque metro Redevelopment Agency. “So we’ve made these city-owned properties available for a new use and it really fills in these missing teeth around Albuquerque where you have these long-standing vacant lots.”
The city anticipates finalizing a development agreement with the Piru Group within the next three months. This agreement would pave the way for the construction of multiple homes on three city-owned lots, including a site located at Central Ave. and Old Coors Road. The initiative aims to revitalize underutilized spaces and provide affordable housing solutions within the city.
