Cubs Re-Enter Alex Bregman Sweepstakes, Eyeing Upgrade at Third Base
CHICAGO, IL – The Chicago Cubs are again pursuing star third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency, according to a report from The Athletic. After a previous attempt last spring training, the Cubs have renewed their interest in the three-time All-Star as they look to bolster their roster following a playoff appearance.
The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma reported that sources briefed on the club’s offseason planning indicate the Cubs’ continued pursuit of Bregman.
This potential move comes as the Cubs appear poised to lose outfielder Kyle Tucker. A shift from Tucker to Bregman would align with the Cubs’ organizational depth, possessing young outfield prospects like Owen Caissie and Moisés Ballesteros. While Matt Shaw demonstrated promise at multiple positions for the Cubs in 2025, Bregman would represent a critically important upgrade at third base and add further versatility to the infield, with the ability to also play second base alongside Shaw and Nico Hoerner, who can fill in at shortstop.
Last winter, the Cubs offered Bregman a four-year, $115 million contract with opt-out clauses after the second and third seasons. Bregman ultimately signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the boston Red sox, exercising his opt-out after just one season.
In 2025, the 31-year-old Bregman posted a .273 batting average with 18 home runs,62 RBI,64 runs scored, and an .821 OPS in 114 games for Boston. A two-time champion, Bregman has reached the 20-home run mark five times in his career and boasts a career .846 OPS,establishing him as the top third baseman available in free agency.
While pitching remains a priority for the Cubs this offseason, the pursuit of Bregman signals their intent to aggressively improve their offense. The Cubs are expected to face significant competition for Bregman’s services, making his free agency one of the most closely watched storylines of the winter.
