Eaglecrest Ski Area Postpones opening Day Due to Unseasonably warm Weather
Juneau,Alaska – Eaglecrest ski Area will delay its opening weekend after recent rainfall erased accumulated snowfall, officials announced Thursday. The postponement impacts the start of the ski area’s highly anticipated 50th season.
General Manager Craig Cimmons explained that while the first Saturday in December is traditionally eyed as a potential opening day,it’s often subject to change given Juneau’s climate. “We always put the first Saturday as the potential opening day, knowing that it’s hit or miss with the climate we have,” Cimmons said. “It’s not abnormal and it’s not a disappointment.”
Recent years have seen similar delays due to insufficient snowpack. Eaglecrest utilizes high-efficiency snowmaking equipment to supplement natural snowfall, but Cimmons stated current conditions don’t allow for a quality experience. “We couldn’t push out the snow we made in a way that we woudl feel we’re delivering a product that we’re really proud of, that’s safe and enjoyable, and an experience we want to offer,” he explained.
The National Weather Service in Juneau forecasts a return to wintry conditions, predicting snow from this weekend through Tuesday night with temperatures dipping to around 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
Eaglecrest plans to provide an update on the opening date status mid-next week. The ski area will continue to monitor conditions and assess when sufficient snow coverage can be established for a safe and enjoyable skiing experience.
