Illinois State Construction Management Students Excel at National ASC Competitions
Illinois State University’s construction management students recently achieved significant success at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 5 competition, earning top placements and representing the university with pride. Led by Dr. Sundeep Inti, the team demonstrated exceptional skills and knowledge in challenging real-world scenarios.
This year’s team participated in two distinct categories: the Commercial Competition, sponsored by Walsh Group, and the Preconstruction Competition, sponsored by Power Construction. In the Commercial Competition, students submitted a bid for the construction of a 29-story high-rise building located in Chicago. The Preconstruction Competition tasked them with analyzing two different construction approaches for a 12-story mid-rise building, also in Chicago.
“Our students performed exceptionally well, serving as proud ambassadors of ISU,” said Dr. Inti.
The success of the team is attributed to Illinois State’s complete construction management curriculum and the program’s requirement of two mandatory internships. These internships provide students with valuable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical request.
“I believe our robust construction management curriculum, combined with the two mandatory internships that students complete during their time at ISU, provides them with well-rounded exposure and the ability to connect classroom learning with real-world applications,” Dr. Inti explained.
Looking forward, Dr. Inti expressed strong interest in continuing the program’s participation in future ASC competitions. He emphasized the immense value these competitions offer students, providing a platform for learning, skill presentation, and real-world experience.
“They provide a meaningful venue for learning, showcasing their skills, and gaining real-world experience. At the same time, these competitions offer ISU an chance to strengthen and build its legacy in construction education,” he stated.
Dr. Inti also acknowledged the crucial support provided by Illinois State University, the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST), and the Department of Technology. He highlighted the availability of computer labs outside of regular hours, mentorship from faculty and the department chair, and administrative assistance as key factors in the team’s readiness.
“I am grateful to the University community and Illinois state’s mission of providing student-focused education, applied learning, and academic excellence,” Dr.Inti concluded.
