Norris States He Woudl Have Assisted Piastri, But Won’t Seek Favor in Title Fight
Abu Dhabi, UAE – lando Norris has affirmed he would have ceded a position to teammate Oscar Piastri had the roles been reversed in the championship decider, but stated he does not anticipate needing to ask for similar assistance as he leads the Formula 1 World Championship heading into the final race. Piastri now trails Norris and faces a challenging scenario at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, requiring a win coupled with a sixth-place finish or lower for his teammate to secure the title.
The championship battle has dramatically shifted in recent races. While Piastri was initially ahead,Norris overcame a 34-point deficit following a retirement at the Dutch Grand Prix in late August. A string of strong results – podiums at Monza, Singapore, and Austin, alongside victories in Mexico and Brazil – propelled him to the front. The stakes were further elaborate by a disqualification for McLaren at the Las Vegas Grand prix, handing a crucial advantage to rival Max Verstappen.
“It’s not something we have discussed,” Piastri said, acknowledging the situation, and adding he doesn’t have an answer until he understands what will be expected of him.
However, Norris emphasized his willingness to prioritize the team’s overall success. “Personally, I think I would [move aside], just as I feel I’m always like that. That’s just how I am,” he stated.
Norris is aiming to become the 11th British driver to win a Formula 1 World Championship. He will enter the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix knowing that his fate is largely in his own hands, though a resurgence from Verstappen remains a possibility.
