Wicked: For Good Review – A Darker, More Complex Sequel

Wicked: For Good” Delivers Darker Second chapter to Oz Saga

Lancaster, PA – November 22, 2023 – The cinematic adaptation of the beloved musical “Wicked” reached its‍ conclusion with the release of “Wicked: For Good” on November 21, following the success of the first film last year. While the initial installment served as a comedic introduction to the world of Oz, the sequel adopts a significantly darker tone, exploring themes of government propaganda, abuse of power, and the consequences of magic.

The two films, despite sharing a narrative core, present markedly different ‌experiences.⁤ “Wicked” offered lighter moments, while “Wicked: For Good” delves into more severe subject matter, including death. Though comedic relief remains, it is indeed⁤ less prominent than‌ in⁢ the first ‍film.

Notably, “Wicked: For Good” expands upon the original story, offering backstory and ‌explanations for events depicted⁢ in ⁣the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz.” The sequel also features two original⁢ songs not present in the Broadway production. ⁣

Performances have been widely praised, particularly those of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as the complex‌ witches,‍ whose rendition of “For⁣ Good” has resonated with audiences. Jonathan Bailey, recently named ⁢PEOPLE’s Sexiest man of the Year, delivers an emotional performance ‌as Fiyero, and ethan Slater has⁢ garnered attention⁤ for his portrayal of ⁣Boq.

Some viewers and critics have suggested the two films would have benefitted from being released as⁣ a single, longer feature, potentially with an ⁢intermission mirroring the stage production. Several theaters hosted double-feature events to allow audiences ⁤to experience the films in close succession.

The first “Wicked” film received numerous awards upon its release, and it remains to⁤ be seen if “Wicked: For Good” will⁤ achieve similar recognition.
