Fort Cherry High School safety Matt Sieg has switched his college commitment, choosing West Virginia University over penn State. Teh decision, announced december 3, 2025, marks a meaningful shift in recruiting for both programs as National Signing day approaches.
sieg’s commitment flip comes after a whirlwind few days, including a recent offer from Virginia Tech following a coaching change and continued interest from the University of Pittsburgh. Ultimately, the opportunity to play close to home and contribute to a program on the rise proved decisive. “It’s been a crazy last couple of days, last 24 hours,” sieg stated. “As I really thought about things, it’s a great opportunity being close (at West Virginia). There’s a lot of excitement. They’re building something really special down there, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
The reversal impacts Penn State‘s defensive recruiting class, while bolstering West Virginia’s efforts to strengthen its secondary. Sieg, a standout player for Fort Cherry, had initially pledged to the Nittany Lions, but the allure of the Mountaineers’ program and proximity to his family swayed his decision.
