BYU football’s Kalani Sitake stayed because of his faith – Deseret News

BYU Coach Kalani‌ Sitake Commits to Long-Term Future, Citing Unique faith-Based Environment

PROVO, Utah – BYU Head⁣ Football Coach⁣ Kalani Sitake has reaffirmed his commitment to leading‌ the‍ Cougars, a decision deeply⁣ rooted in the university’s ‌distinctive mission and ⁤his ability to integrate faith into the program, ​according to a ​report‍ by the Deseret News. The news comes‍ as BYU prepares to ⁤compete in the Big‌ 12 Championship this week.

University and Church officials express strong support for ‍Sitake, believing he perfectly embodies the values of a⁣ BYU coach.‍ BYU President‍ Reese stated, “In many ways, kalani Sitake⁢ is the public face of Brigham ⁤Young University.He ‌leads our most prominent athletic team, and you couldn’t ask for ⁤a better exemplar of the Christ-centered ⁣values for⁢ which this university stands.” ​Reese also highlighted the Board ⁤of ‍Trustees’ “great trust and⁣ confidence” in Sitake’s ​dedication to​ BYU’s mission of developing student-athletes through study and faith.

The ability⁤ to build a competitive Power 4⁤ football program amidst the challenges ⁣of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) while upholding BYU’s ‍unique identity is “powerfully appreciated” in Provo⁢ and Salt Lake City, officials say. A​ sentiment echoed⁢ by the phrase, “BYU wants to win, but BYU wants ​to win as a family,” ⁤with Sitake ​being considered integral to that family.

sitake‌ himself expressed gratitude ⁣for the possibility to remain at BYU. “I want to be here,” he saeid. He ⁣emphasized the unique environment at BYU, where discussions of scripture can be openly ‍combined ‌with topics like football, calculus, ⁢and biology.”It’s‍ even ⁣expected of us,”​ he noted,adding that the program encourages players to deepen their spirituality,regardless of their faith. “We have a lot of men that are different faiths here. I want⁢ them to be‌ more spiritual than they’ve ever been.”

The⁣ decision ⁣for Sitake to stay was supported by key figures in the football world, including Super ​Bowl champion Andy Reid, a fellow member of ‍the⁢ lavell Edwards coaching tree. Sitake paused during an interview‌ Tuesday night to read a supportive text from Reid and his wife, Patti, and noted that Steve Young also shared⁢ his happiness with the ⁣outcome.

As a light snow ⁣fell on Provo, the focus remains ⁢on Saturday’s game, with BYU poised to continue⁣ its season under⁢ Sitake’s leadership.
