Could Ben Simmons Return to 76ers? NBA Free Agent Gives Update on Comeback Attempt
PHILADELPHIA – Ben Simmons’ potential return to the Philadelphia 76ers is gaining traction as the former All-Star reportedly considers his future in the NBA,and has been linked to the team amid recent injuries to key players.
Reports surfaced earlier this offseason indicating Simmons was “questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA next season,” according to ESPN’s Brian windhorst. Though, despite this uncertainty, Simmons has expressed a continued affection for Philadelphia. He previously told Marc J. Spears of Andscape in 2023, “People always ask me like, ’If you were to get traded again where you want it to be?’ I always say, ‘Just Philly. Philly is a second home to me.'”
Simmons’ career has stalled as leaving the 76ers, hampered by knee and back injuries that have limited his availability over the past four seasons. In the 2023-24 campaign, he split time between the Brooklyn Nets, where he averaged 6.2 points per game as a starter, and the Los Angeles Clippers, where he averaged 2.9 points in 18 games off the bench.
The Knicks reportedly offered Simmons a one-year minimum contract this summer, but Marc Stein reported Simmons was “hopeful of securing a contract above the minimum.” A return to Philadelphia could hinge on Simmons’ health and willingness to accept a minimum contract, as well as the 76ers’ interest.
Recent injuries to Sixers players including Joel Embiid, andre Drummond, Paul George, kelly Oubre Jr., Trendon Watford and Quentin Grimes have further fueled speculation about a potential reunion.
