spinach Power: Research links Carotenoid Intake to Reduced Inflammation, Healthy Aging
Stockholm, Sweden – December 2, 2025, 13:54 CET – New research suggests incorporating spinach, particularly in smoothie form, can significantly boost carotenoid levels in the body and combat age-related inflammation, offering a promising dietary approach to healthy aging and disease prevention. The findings, stemming from a study led by Rosanna Chung and utilizing data from the large-scale Scapis population study funded by the Heart-Lung Foundation, highlight the importance of both how we consume vegetables and a proactive lifestyle.
While the benefits of carotenoids are well-established, maximizing their impact requires careful readiness. Overcooking vegetables can drastically reduce these vital nutrients. ChungS work explores how strategic combinations within spinach smoothies can optimize carotenoid absorption. Crucially, the research underscores that inflammation isn’t an inevitable result of aging; individuals maintaining healthier lifestyles demonstrate significantly lower levels of inflammation, even in later years.
“There are elderly people with a very low degree of inflammation. They usually have a healthier lifestyle,” Chung emphasizes, pointing to the combined benefits of exercise, a nutritious diet, sufficient sleep, and maintaining a healthy weight. However, she cautions that even diligent adherence to healthy habits doesn’t guarantee immunity, as other influencing factors always exist.
The Scapis study data provides a robust foundation for these conclusions, offering insights into population-level trends. The research was reported by Cecilia Klintö/TT.
