JOÃO PESSOA, Brazil – A 19-year-old man was killed Sunday after entering the lion enclosure at Arruda Camara zoo Botanical Park in João Pessoa, Brazil. Authorities identified the victim as Gerson De Melo Machado.
The incident occurred when Machado deliberately climbed into the enclosure, according to a statement released by the zoo. He was later mauled by a lioness. The teams contacted the competent authorities and provided the necessary support for the assistance and the work of the forensics team,” the zoo’s statement read.
“This is an extremely sad episode for everyone,” the zoo added, reiterating its commitment to “rigorous technical standards and safety protocols” and full cooperation with investigating bodies.
