Oleksandr Usyk Targets Deontay Wilder for ⁤Next Bout,‍ Citing His Enduring Status as a Top Heavyweight

Unified heavyweight champion ⁢Oleksandr Usyk has identified Deontay wilder as his preferred⁢ opponent for his next fight, signaling a potential‌ clash between two⁤ of teh ⁢division’s most prominent figures. The announcement comes after Usyk’s August victory⁣ over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium, which secured his second reign ⁣as undisputed heavyweight champion.

This potential matchup arrives at a pivotal moment for both fighters. Usyk, 38, recently relinquished his WBO title, elevating Britain’s Fabio Wardley to full champion status. While Wilder, 40, has experienced‍ recent setbacks, including consecutive losses⁣ to Joseph Parker in 2023 and Zhilei Zhang⁤ in⁣ 2024, ‌Usyk maintains that the American remains a significant draw ⁤and a⁤ formidable opponent. The fight would represent a key test for Usyk as he continues his career in 2024 and‌ beyond.

“I continue fighting next year. I want to fight Deontay Wilder.⁤ I think it’s engaging,” Usyk told Boxing King⁢ Media.

Wilder’s recent form includes a seventh-round ⁣stoppage of tyrrell Anthony ⁣Herndon ⁣in June, following a period of inactivity exceeding a year. Despite these ⁢results, Usyk clearly values Wilder’s legacy and⁤ name recognition.

“He is a world champion ⁢guy. A very famous and strong guy,” Usyk stated. “One of the great heavyweights of‍ the ⁤last 10 years. I spoke⁢ with my ⁤team and said he is the first option.”

Wilder previously held the WBC world championship and was widely considered ‌the most risky puncher in the heavyweight ⁢division before his trilogy of fights against Tyson Fury. A fight with Usyk would present‍ a compelling stylistic clash and a significant commercial prospect for both boxers.
