Toledo offensive lineman Matt Hofer has been named a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, an award recognizing players who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and community service. The announcement was made Thursday,recognizing Hofer among 15 finalists nationally.
Hofer, a fifth-year senior, joins an elite group of college football players celebrated for their impact both on and off the field. the Wuerffel Trophy, named after former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, prioritizes a player’s commitment to serving others-a quality Hofer has consistently demonstrated throughout his career at Toledo. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8 at a gala in Orlando, Fla.
Hofer’s nomination stems from his extensive volunteer work with organizations like the Toledo Area Food Bank, Bethany House, and the Special Olympics. He has spearheaded team initiatives focused on community engagement, embodying a servant-leadership beliefs that extends beyond the football program.
“Matt is the epitome of what we want in a student-athlete at Toledo,” said head coach Jason Candle in a university release. “He’s a tremendous player, but more importantly, he’s a selfless individual who consistently puts the needs of others before his own.”
The Wuerffel Trophy selection committee evaluates nominees based on three pillars: athletic achievement, academic success, and community service. Hofer excels in all areas, maintaining a strong academic record while consistently performing at a high level on the field as a key contributor to Toledo’s offensive line.
