‘Stranger Things’ Season 5: Misfits Prepare for a Final Stand
The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” picks up with Hawkins reeling from the merging of the real world and the Upside Down, an event largely perceived by townspeople as an earthquake. The core group of young heroes, aware of the true threat posed by Vecna, continue their efforts to locate and destroy him before he can fully consume their world.
Joining this fight are established allies: Mike’s sister Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Will’s brother Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), friends Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), Will and Jonathan’s mother Joyce Byers (Winona ryder), and Eleven‘s adoptive father, Jim Hopper (David Harbour). Though, the group faces a significant challenge with max Mayfield remaining in a comatose state, her consciousness trapped within Vecna’s mindscape despite attempts to reach her using Kate Bush’s “Running Up that Hill.”
The Byers family continues to reside in the basement of the Wheeler home, having relocated there following repeated attacks on their own house by demodogs and U.S. agents. The Wheeler family dynamic is also strained, with Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) increasingly turning to alcohol and Ted Wheeler (Joe Chrest) expressing frustration over his stolen breakfast bacon. Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher), the youngest Wheeler child, is now approaching the age the original cast were when the series began in 2016. Lucas Sinclair’s younger sister, Erica (Priah Ferguson), is now attending middle school science class with Mr.Clarke, continuing to deliver sharp-witted commentary.
The show acknowledges the challenge of portraying older actors as high school students, noting that Millie Bobby Brown was 12 during the show’s 2016 premiere and is now 21. despite criticism regarding the age discrepancy, the review suggests that accepting actors like Finn Wolfhard (22) as teenagers is consistent with the show’s established willingness to embrace fantastical elements, such as “talking” Christmas lights and a Soviet lab beneath the mall.
Early reviews of the first four episodes reveal a build-up to a “mega battle.” Eleven has significantly enhanced her powers, now capable of feats like flinging armored vehicles and manipulating minds with minimal physical strain. Dustin Henderson is portrayed as hardened by the loss of his friend, Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn). Steve and Jonathan continue to vie for Nancy’s attention, while she focuses on improving her marksmanship. Hopper sports a noticeably long beard, and Karen Wheeler demonstrates unexpected strength wielding a broken wine bottle.
the review emphasizes that while the characters’ core circumstances remain similar, their perspectives have evolved, leading to unpredictable developments in their powers, strengths, and alliances. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer are focusing on the interpersonal relationships between the characters, blending high-budget action with the ongoing storylines of the beloved ensemble cast. The review concludes that the characters, and the connections fans have forged with them, remain the driving force behind the show’s enduring appeal.
