Macaulay Culkin Hints at a ”Home Alone 3″ with a Heartfelt Twist
More than three decades after the beloved Christmas classic Home Alone captivated audiences, Macaulay Culkin is potentially open to revisiting the role of Kevin McCallister. Long hesitant about reprising the part, the actor now suggests a third, authentic installment that honors the spirit of the original films. This comes after the widely-panned Disney+ reboot, Home Sweet Home Alone (2021), failed to resonate with fans.
Culkin sparked renewed hope during his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour, where he screened the original Home Alone followed by a Q&A session with the audience. he revealed he was “not completely allergic” to the idea of returning as Kevin.
However, Culkin isn’t simply relying on nostalgia. He’s developed a concept for a sequel he believes could genuinely excite audiences. The pitch centers around an adult Kevin McCallister, grappling with the challenges of modern life – potentially as a widower or divorcee – and raising a son alone.
The story would flip the original premise on its head. Culkin envisions Kevin as an overworked and preoccupied father, unintentionally neglecting his child. This neglect leads the son to resent his father and, mirroring the first film, lock him outside. The son would then become the architect of the traps, reversing the iconic dynamic.
“He would work really hard, to the point of no longer paying enough attention to his child. And the child would start to resent him and decide… to lock him outside,” Culkin explained.
This role reversal isn’t just a comedic device, according to Culkin. He believes it offers a powerful narrative opportunity to explore the complex and fragile bond between a father and son – a crucial element missing from the 2021 attempt, which received overwhelmingly negative reviews, scoring a dismal 13% on Rotten Tomatoes and 1.1/5 on Allociné.
Culkin sees the house itself as a metaphor for their strained relationship, with Kevin needing to “regain access to his son’s heart.” He believes this concept would allow for scenes that are both funny, tender, and deeply nostalgic.
While no studio has yet committed to the project,Culkin’s expressed interest and compelling pitch could attract attention in a Hollywood landscape increasingly driven by nostalgia and unexpected comebacks. Fans are eagerly awaiting the possibility of Kevin McCallister’s return – not just to the screen, but to the heart of the holiday season.
