The cost of the traditional Thanksgiving feast is offering some relief this year. The American Farm Bureau Federation reports a 16% decrease in the price of a whole frozen turkey compared to last year.
Beyond the meal and family dynamics,NPR is spotlighting lesser-known Thanksgiving-adjacent traditions. Morning Edition recently featured a nationwide search for unique rituals, including the Yule Fest in southern Iowa and the Santa Barbara Zoo’s practice of feeding leftover Halloween pumpkins to its animals in search of traditions.
NPR’s coverage also extends to the emotional and mental well-being associated with food. Research suggests that whole grains, specifically the fiber they contain, can improve mood and reduce the risk of mood disorders, offering a scientific outlook on holiday comfort foods.
The celebration of food, family, and love is also highlighted through a review of Carole Boston Weatherford and Frank Morrison’s picture book, Family Feast!, which showcases a family enjoying a meal together, applicable to various holidays and gatherings.
