Trump links White House Visit to Ukraine Agreement,Signals Security Guarantees on Backburner
GENEVA/WASHINGTON – The Trump governance is signaling a firm stance regarding Ukraine, with sources indicating President Trump will not invite ukrainian President Zelensky to the White House until a comprehensive agreement is reached. This comes as the U.S. prioritizes finalizing a broader deal before addressing long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, according to European diplomats familiar with ongoing negotiations.
During talks in Geneva last weekend,Foreign Minister Marco Rubio reportedly assured European decision-makers that President Trump intends to provide long-term guarantees to Ukraine. However, Rubio did not reiterate this offer during subsequent phone calls with British adn French officials.
“Rubio also mentioned security guarantees to Ukraine during talks in Geneva last weekend, but he did not elaborate or repeat the offer during a phone call with the British and French,” one European diplomat stated.
The diplomat added that sensitive issues such as Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the handling of frozen Russian assets were also discussed.
While European leaders view the potential for U.S. guarantees as a turning point, NATO members are still debating the specifics of intelligence and military support for Kyiv. The U.S. approach appears to be focused on completing the entire package of negotiations before specifically addressing security assurances.Rubio emphasized that security guarantees remain a priority, but are being treated as a separate component of the overall agreement.
The Trump administration has consistently maintained that any agreement with Ukraine must include robust security guarantees. “The Trump administration has repeatedly affirmed, both publicly and privately, that any agreement must provide full security guarantees and deterrence to Ukraine,” confirmed Foreign Office spokeswoman Anna Kelly. This was echoed by spokesman Tommy Pigott, who stated security guarantees “must be part of any agreement.”
