Terps‘ Six-Game Win Streak Snapped by No. 12 Gonzaga in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, NV – Maryland‘s remarkable six-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night with a loss to No. 12 Gonzaga in a neutral-site matchup at the Geico Players Era Men’s Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs defeated the Terps, improving their all-time series record against Maryland to 4-1.
This defeat marks a shift for the Terps, who entered the tournament riding high on momentum. While the loss doesn’t derail their season, it presents a challenge to their continued growth and ranking. Maryland will have a rapid chance to rebound, continuing play in the tournament on Wednesday against an opponent yet to be resolute. The outcome of Tuesday’s remaining games will dictate both the opponent and broadcast details.
The history between the two programs is limited, with all five meetings taking place at neutral locations. Maryland’s sole victory in the series occured in 1995,an 87-63 rout that remains the largest margin of victory for either team in the series.
Freshman standout Julian Reese led the Terps in scoring, continuing a trend of consistent performance. Sophomore guard Hakim hart has scored in double figures in all six games he’s played this season. Despite a strong effort on the boards, with Maryland securing 14 offensive rebounds to Gonzaga’s 13, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bulldogs.
another Terp freshman, Jamie Adams, is making his mark nationally, having converted 46 free throws through his first seven collegiate games – the most of any freshman in the nation this season.
Maryland will await the results of Tuesday’s remaining tournament games to learn their next opponent and game time for Wednesday’s contest.
