Tuberculosis Case Identified at University of Rouen, Over 150 Contacts Traced
Rouen, France - A case of tuberculosis has been detected at the University of Rouen’s city center campus, prompting health officials to identify and monitor more than 150 potential contact cases among students and faculty. the Regional Health Agency (ARS) confirmed the case Tuesday, following reports from local news outlets HERE Normandie and 76 Actu.
The outbreak underscores the ongoing, though typically contained, presence of tuberculosis in France. While less contagious than illnesses like the flu or measles, tuberculosis remains a reportable infectious disease, and public health authorities are actively working to prevent further spread. The Seine-Maritime Anti-Tuberculosis Center (CLAT) is leading the inquiry, having already identified approximately 150 student contacts and 15 faculty contacts.
According to the ARS, individuals identified as contacts do not require specific preventative measures beyond those recommended for any respiratory symptoms. The case involves Mycobacterium tuberculosis, commonly known as Koch’s bacillus, which primarily affects the lungs and is transmitted through the air.
Public Health France data indicates 154 cases of tuberculosis were reported in Normandy during 2023, contributing to a national total of between 4,000 and 5,000 cases annually. The ARS emphasizes that all tuberculosis cases must be reported to facilitate monitoring and control efforts.
