Misereor Files Complaint Against Aurubis Over Peruvian Copper Mining
The Catholic relief association Misereor has filed a complaint with the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) against metal company Aurubis, alleging human rights violations and environmental damage linked to its copper imports from Peru. Misereor, along with Peruvian partner organization Red Muqui and affected Peruvian communities, claims Aurubis is violating its duty of care under the Supply Chain Act.
The complaint focuses on copper mining activities near Puerto Huarmey and in the Tumilaca valley, both on Peru’s pacific coast. Misereor reports that mining has poisoned groundwater, contaminated soil and fishing grounds, and led to widespread health problems including cancer, respiratory illnesses, and skin diseases among over 2,000 residents. Alarmingly, arsenic has been detected in the blood of many children and adults.
Misereor asserts Aurubis holds significant responsibility for the suffering and environmental pollution. They demand the company take action to remediate the damage and provide reparations to those affected, in consultation with the communities.
aurubis responded stating they rigorously monitor business partners and continuously seek improvements, addressing deviations from standards collaboratively. They claim potential partners are examined according to “legal and industry-standard obligations” even before business relationships begin.
Despite ongoing efforts to weaken the supply Chain Act, Misereor emphasizes it remains in effect. They urge BAFA to conduct a thorough and impartial examination, order corrective measures, and consider imposing fines if violations are confirmed. They highlight Peru’s position as the world’s second-largest copper producer, and the devastating cost to its population supporting global demand.
