MANCHESTER, England – everton manager Sean Dyche has dismissed the incident involving Idrissa Gueye and teammate Michael Keane as a momentary lapse in judgment, stating the midfielder has apologized and the matter is closed. Gueye was shown a red card during Everton’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford following a physical altercation with Keane in the first half.
“I’m disappointed we got the sending off. But we’ve all been footballers, we get angry with our teammates. He’s apologised for the sending off,he’s praised the players and thanked them for it and apologised,” Dyche said after the match. He added, “There’s no problem, we move on.”
Gueye, 36, also issued a public apology via Instagram, stating, “I wont to apologise first to my teammate Michael Keane. I want to take full duty for my action. I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club.Emotions can run high but nothing justifies such behavior.”
Despite playing with 10 men for much of the game, Everton secured a historic win – Dyche’s first victory at Old Trafford in 18 attempts. The result marked a significant upset, particularly given Manchester United’s aspirations to climb the Premier League table.
“If you’d have said to me when we went went to 10 men we were going to get a result, still at 0-0, I’d have said that would be really tough,” Dyche commented. “That was a brilliant, brilliant performance from the players. Resilience, toughness, commitments, all the words you want as a manager and a great goal as well.”
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed frustration with his team’s performance, noting a lack of intensity and fight. He also offered a contrasting view on the Gueye incident, stating, “I don’t agree with that red card. We can fight with teammates. I know it’s violent conduct because the referee explained but I don’t agree. I hope my players, when they lose the ball, they fight each other – thought they cannot get sent off! But that is a good feeling, not a bad feeling.”
The defeat leaves Manchester united in 10th place in the Premier League, missing an chance to move into the top five. Amorim acknowledged the team’s current shortcomings, stating, “I know which point we are at…we are not even near the point to fight for the best positions in the league. We have a lot to do.”
